Upallay
instrumentation | SATB
date | 2018
duration | 11'
premiere | May 14th, 2018 by Quorum Boston conducted by Lorraine Fitzmaurice @ First Church Somerville
note | 'Upallay' is the Quechua word 'to quiet'. This piece engages with the idea of gatekeeping of identity, specifically to being Latinx and diasporic. Though Spanish was the language forced on Latin America by colonizers, today its often used to gatekeep non spanish-speaking Latin Americans. As both a composer with both latinx and Quechua blood, this piece has the goal of using vowels, words, and phonemes to deconstruct the idea of gatekeeping through language access.
